Why Is My Cleaning Head Rotating Slowly?
Slow or inconsistent rotation can be an early warning that something has changed inside your cleaning head or in the system supplying it.
A rotating cleaning head that starts slowing down is usually telling you something has changed inside the head or in the system supplying it. Catching the problem early can help prevent additional wear and a more expensive repair.

Common Causes of Slow Rotation
Mineral or Scale Buildup
Hard-water deposits are one of the first things to check. Scale can accumulate inside the cleaning head and interfere with the movement of internal components.
If buildup is suspected, the head may need to be descaled. Depending on the application, AaquaFlow, CLR, or white vinegar can be used for descaling.
After soaking, thoroughly rinse the head and run clean water through it for approximately 10 minutes.
Plugged or Restricted Nozzles
A partially plugged nozzle can change the way water flows through the cleaning head and affect its rotation.
Inspect the nozzles for mineral deposits, debris, uneven spray patterns, visible damage, or wear.
Also make sure the nozzles are properly sized for your system’s GPM and PSI.
Not Enough Water Flow
Your cleaning head needs the correct amount of water to operate properly.
If your pressure washer isn’t supplying the required GPM, the head may rotate slowly or perform inconsistently — even if the pressure reading appears normal.
Restricted Filter or Water Supply
Before assuming the cleaning head itself needs repair, check the rest of the system.
A dirty filter, restricted hose, fitting, or inadequate water supply can reduce the flow reaching the cleaning head.
AaquaTools recommends using an inline high-pressure Y-filter to help prevent debris from reaching the cleaning head.
Worn Internal Components
Cleaning heads contain components that naturally wear with use.
Seals, gears, bearings, cage components, thrust pins, and other internal parts can eventually affect how smoothly the head rotates.
If the head has been thoroughly cleaned and you’re supplying the correct GPM and PSI but it still rotates slowly, it may be time for an inspection.
What NOT to Do
If your cleaning head isn’t rotating correctly, don’t fill it with grease or spray WD-40 into it. Petroleum-based products aren’t the solution to slow rotation. Instead, determine why the head is slowing down.

Before sending your cleaning head in for service, work through these six checks.
Is your pressure washer supplying the required water flow?
Are you operating within the cleaning head’s recommended pressure range?
Make sure they are clean, unobstructed, and properly sized.
Make sure the filter is clean and allowing unrestricted flow.
Mineral deposits may indicate that the cleaning head needs to be descaled.
After cleaning and flushing, check whether rotation is still slow or inconsistent.

Your cleaning head doesn’t need to stop completely before you investigate. If it suddenly starts rotating slower than normal, check your flow, pressure, nozzles, filter, and buildup before continuing to operate it.
