Why WD-40 Is a Bad Choice?
Tech’s Corner / Maintenance
Never Use WD-40 on Your Industrial Cleaning Head
When a rotating cleaning head starts sticking or slowing down, lubrication might seem like the obvious answer. Using the wrong product can turn a small maintenance issue into a much larger repair.
When an industrial rotating cleaning head starts sticking, slowing down, or not rotating properly, reaching for a can of WD-40 might seem like an easy fix. Don’t do it.
The Problem
Why WD-40 Is a Bad Choice
Industrial cleaning heads are precision equipment. Petroleum-based products such as WD-40 can leave residue inside the cleaning head and interfere with seals, O-rings, and other internal components.
That residue can also collect dirt, debris, and buildup, creating additional problems instead of fixing the original issue.
Better Maintenance
What Should You Use Instead?
For routine cleaning and mineral buildup, use an appropriate descaling solution such as AaquaFlow, CLR, or white vinegar.
Depending on the cleaning head and its condition, soaking components for approximately 2–3 hours, followed by a thorough rinse and clean-water operation, can help remove buildup.
- Do not pack the cleaning head with grease.
- Do not spray petroleum-based lubricants into the head.
- Flush the equipment thoroughly with clean water.
- Inspect filtration and nozzles when performance changes.
Preventative Maintenance
Catch Problems Before They Become Repairs
Regular maintenance can significantly reduce unexpected downtime. Inspect your cleaning equipment regularly and address changes in rotation, pressure, sound, or cleaning performance early.
AaquaTools recommends sending rotating cleaning heads in annually for inspection and service.
Tech’s Take
Don’t Force a Cleaning Head Back Into Operation
If the head is slowing down, leaking, making unusual noises, or no longer rotating properly, continuing to operate it can turn a small maintenance problem into a more expensive repair.
